Is Music Not Allowed in Islam?
Is music not allowed in Islam? The question of musical instruments is a hot topic nowadays. While a certain person has said that music is prohibited, there are numerous examples of the Prophet’s music being permissible. Here are a few examples. Singing at festive occasions is also allowed. Whether music is allowed depends on the context. If you are observing Islamic holidays, you should be aware that it is not permissible to play musical instruments.
Singing
The ban on singing has been in place since the first century when the Companions were unanimous on the matter. Some types of songs are considered haram, including those that are aimed at preventing a person from performing their obligatory prayer. Others are not permitted at all, such as songs with sexual or immoral themes or that involve non-Mahram women.
The Prophet also prohibited singing, and some Sahabah said that it is the work of Shaytan. He said that it would bring zina and hypocrisy in the heart. Moreover, it clouds the mind and blocks a person from hearing the Quran. Singing is a natural inclination for people, which is why it’s important to avoid it.
Singing on festive occasions
While singing on festive occasions is prohibited in Islam, there are some exceptions. For instance, it is acceptable to sing when petitioning Allah or when the Prophet Muhammad returns from his expedition to the Tabook. The Prophet Muhammad also approved of singing, as long as it does not involve swaying the body or dancing frantically. The story of Adi, the entertainer who performed at the first Islamic wedding, shows that the Prophet tolerated music.
Some early scholars of Islam, such as Ibn Arabi, did not condemn singing. They said that music can be permissible during special occasions, such as weddings. However, they argued that musicians must avoid offensive lyrics or inappropriate musical instruments.
Importance of time
In Islam, time is an important factor to be respected. The Quran and Sunnah teach us that we should use our time well and do not waste it. As a Muslim, it is essential that we devote time to piety and to Allah’s commandments. The Holy Quran also stresses the importance of patience and doing good deeds.
The Prophet Muhammad stressed the importance of time in the Quran. According to him, we must spend the first half of our time for God, the second half for our family, and the third part for ourselves. By valuing our time wisely, we will achieve success in this life and the next.
Importance of place
According to the Holy Quran, music and art are considered ‘laghw,’ which is the Arabic word for vain and useless. However, this principle can mean different things to different people. Some believe that music and art are ‘laghw’ because they interfere with the pursuit of higher values. Here are some examples.
Music is a tool used by Shaitan to seduce people into sinful activities. Although the Qur’an does not specifically prohibit music, Shia Muslims do. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Sanam Marvi are examples of musicians who use music to inspire their followers.
