What is the Name of the Bible in Islam?
While the views of the Bible differ according to context, the common view is that the text has been corrupted and badly misinterpreted. This can be due to accidental scribe mistakes. In addition, some writers hold that different interpretations apply to different parts of the Bible. Here are some examples of how Islam views the Bible.
Arabic
In the Arabic language, Jesus is called Yasu’, a transliteration of the Greek name Jesus. It is an Arabic name with positive connotations, and was used by Arab Christians before Islam and afterward. However, after Islam, many Arab Christians began using Greek or other foreign names. They have been forced to give up their family names, as well.
It is also possible that the name Jesus has different origins in different Arabic-speaking countries. Although the name Jesus is the preferred translation in English, the name “Isa” was also used by Arab Christians before the advent of Islam. However, the word “Issa” has Muslim associations and cannot be considered a Christian name. Nevertheless, Christians do not have to adhere to the name “Jesus” in Arabic if they wish to practice their religion.
While the Arabic name of the Bible is largely ignored by biblical scholars and historians, the stories of the biblical book in Arabic have been preserved in a considerable number of manuscripts. Moreover, the story of the Arabic Bible can be used to shed light on cultural transformations in the Arabic-speaking world.
New Testament
The New Testament is a collection of 27 books, including the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The Gospels contain selected recollections of Jesus’ life, while Acts outlines the work of Christ’s followers to spread the Christian faith. The Epistles are letters of instruction, admonition, and encouragement written by St. Paul and three other writers. The Book of Revelation contains an apocalyptic description of God’s intervention in human history.
The Greek Quran calls Allah “theos,” while the New Testament refers to him as “Hose.” Both texts describe the same being as God. According to the New Testament, Allah is a “multipersonal” being who is simultaneously the Father and Jesus Christ the Son. This is consistent with the Christian concept of Allah.
The New Testament also states that God wants all of humanity to come to Him. While God is all-loving and does not exclude anyone, humanity rejects this love and is destined for hell.
Gospels
The Bible and Islam share similarities, but also have some differences. One major difference is that the Bible uses different words. The Arabic word “Allah” is not used in the Bible. Rather, the Bible uses the Greek word “theos,” which means “God.” The Old Testament was written in Hebrew/Aramaic, while the New Testament uses Greek words.
The New Testament is the Bible as it is used by the Christian faith. But Muslims do not believe the New Testament to be the actual Gospel of Jesus. Christians, on the other hand, view it as the word of God. Muslims consider the gospels to contain some teachings of Jesus and interpretations of the writers. Nevertheless, the Bible remains a valuable source of knowledge for Muslims.
The Quran also mentions the Bible. Muhammad also knew the Bible and praised it in the Quran. The Bible contains stories of the Redeemer, the Savior, and the Messiah, who will return from the dead. In the Bible, Jesus declares Himself to be in the tomb for three days before He is raised. He even compares Himself to Jonah in the belly of the great fish.
Injil
The name Injil means “book of revelation” in Arabic. It is an ancient biography of Jesus, reporting what He had been revealed. As Plutarch says, “Life is the course of a person’s life.” So, it would make sense that the name of the Bible should be “life,” but that’s not exactly what we’re talking about here.
The Bible has a long history in Islam. The gospel of John, for example, was passed on by word of mouth for nearly thirty-five years. This is because the original gospels were written in Arabic. This is why Muslims often refer to the Bible in Arabic as “the word of God.”
The Bible in Islam is different from the Bible in other religions. Although the Qur’an doesn’t mention the Bible by name, it does mention the Taurat and Injil, which are books given to prophet Moses. However, the Bible is not equivalent to the Torah/Pentateuch of Jews and Christians. Neither is it equivalent to the Old Testament of Christians, which consists of dozens of books attributed to various prophets before Jesus.
