Is Earth Flat in Islam?
The Quran describes the Earth as having two Easts and two Wests. It is possible to interpret this as ‘East is east of west,’ but in early Muslim times, this meant the two extreme points on the horizon. It is not clear exactly what these verses mean, but some scholars have speculated that they may refer to the North and South poles.
Qur’an verses denying sphericity
The Qur’an verses denying’sphericity’ can be interpreted in many ways. One way is to consider it as a statement about the earth itself. However, critics say that this verse is based on the creation of the heavens and earth. This is a weak argument, as scholars say that there is stronger evidence for a spherical Earth.
Another popular interpretation is that Qur’an verses denying’sphericity’ refer to the Earth and the Sun. However, this translation is a bit misleading. The word ‘fayad’, which can mean ‘earth’, is feminine in Arabic. The word ‘fayat’ is also used to mean ‘earth.’ These two definitions of’sphericity’ are therefore essentially ambiguous and can be read either way.
Several Islamic scholars have claimed that the Qur’an was aware of the sphericity of the Earth, and that it was the consensus view of the early scholars of Islam. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. Furthermore, critics point out that Muhammad and his companions did not know the Earth was spherical.
Hadiths supporting flat earth
In Islam, a concept known as the flat earth is supported by many Hadiths. This is because the Quran makes reference to the Earth being flat. According to the Quran, the earth was created as a flat object. There are also indirect references in the Quran to the flat Earth, which is a stronger argument in favor of the flat earth idea.
This idea was first proposed by an early pre-Islamic poet named Zayd b. ‘Amr, who had met the prophet Muhammad prior to the prophet’s life and is recorded in Ibn Ishaq’s biography of Muhammad. Had the earth been a sphere, half the world would have been dark most of the time, resulting in failed crops and starvation.
Despite the fact that the Quran and Bible teach that the Earth is flat, many people still think that it is a sphere. The Christian Church exacerbated the unpopularity of this concept. In addition to this, the concept of a sphere first came into existence in ancient Greece, around the seventh century BCE. Until the sixteenth century, this debate was not resolved. However, it was known that the philosopher Aristotle hinted at a sphere-like shape of the earth long before the birth of Jesus.
Meaning of word “madadnaha”
The meaning of the word “madadnaha” is not entirely clear. Some Muslim apologists say it means “earth shaped like an ostrich egg,” but the root word in Arabic actually means “to spread out, cast away, or drive along.” Whatever the meaning, this word is a curious word.
This word is also used to describe the flat top of a chamber or house. Another translation is “surface.” The root word sataha can also mean a flat plane, so it is not a surprise to find references to flat surfaces throughout the Quran. However, these metaphors are often confusing, since the Quran often uses words with flat connotations to describe things that are not flat. The most common example of this is found in verse 88:20.
